We are currently looking for a Head of Planning to join our team at our head offices in Abergavenny

The position is full time offering the opportunity to develop, implement and support across the business a range of project and business sustainability strategies and winning future work.

Role Responsibility

As the Head of Planning, you will be leading civil engineering planning and programming for all sectors of the Griffiths business in order to deliver safe, high quality, profitable and on-schedule outcomes. 

You will be accountable for (but not limited to) the implementation and continuous improvement of the company’s planning and programming processes and procedures.  The role holder will be expected to demonstrate leadership and people management skills, to deliver an efficient planning and programming management service to civil engineering tenders and to all projects across the Griffiths sectors.

On a day to day basis, the successful Head of Planning's duties and responsibilities will include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Support Griffiths’ business strategy and business plans, working closely with the team to roll-out key initiatives and achieve the organisation’s strategic goals. 

  • Manage and support a team of planners / programmers. This will include people management interventions such as performance management, individual focus reviews, manpower planning and the continuous professional development of the team. 

  • Mentor and coach the planning team members in line with company values and behavioural competencies, to maximise the potential of both the team and the individuals. 

  • Manage and control implementation and operation of Griffiths’ Programme Policy and Protocol. 

  • Develop, implement, maintain and improve sound programming and planning practices that are congruent with various construction contracts.  

  • Liaise with Operations Directors, Contract Managers and delivery teams to identify and agree project specific planning & programme needs.  Allocate and manage planning and programme resource to meet these needs.  

  • Support the project planners / programmers and delivery teams, to provide comprehensive planning and programme advice, guidance and the necessary information to delivery teams, to support project delivery on time.  

  • Lead the project planners / programmers in supporting delivery teams with the identification of change and in securing extensions of time which we are entitled to. 

  • Support the project teams in providing comprehensive planning and programme advice and guidance in relation to early warnings, compensation events and change management generally, contributing to the identification and development of commercial and programme strategy for recovery of costs and time. 

  • Work closely with the Commercial Directors and members of the Commercial team, monitoring all project programmes to ensure the best possible position is achieved at final account agreement. 

  • Establish programme monitoring and reporting procedures consistent across all projects including reporting for monthly internal Operations Review meetings and Employer Monthly progress meetings. 

  • Liaise with Pre-Construction Director and Bid Managers to identify and agree tender specific planning & programme needs.  Allocate and manage planning and programme resource to meet these needs.  

  • Manage production of tender programmes, contributing to the development of the bid win strategy. 

  • Strive for continuous improvement and efficiencies within the planning / programming team. 

  • Be familiar with the different types of programming software used across the industry and manage the use of these within the civil engineering division. 

 

The Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate must exhibit excellent interpersonal skills to engage, inspire and motivate people to drive the business forward and achieve our goals.  They will demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with clients, sub-contractors, staff and other stakeholders. 

It is essential that any candidates are degree qualified or alternatively, if you can demonstrate suitable programming / planning management experience.

Furthermore, you must also have the following experience:

  • At least ten years’ experience working in construction with at least five years in a planning role. Bid stage and contract delivery programming experience. 

  • Working knowledge of programming software including MS Project, Asta PowerProject, & Primavera P6. 

  • Proven track record of programme management.    

Although not essential, having a CIOB, ICE, CIHT, APM or equivalent professional qualification would be beneficial; as would having knowledge and understanding of modern civil engineering techniques, plant & equipment and an appreciation of logistical needs and issues.
