Internal Communications and Channels Manager

Our internal communication and channels manager looks after our suite of channels including The Circle intranet, One magazine, regular announcements and content to support campaigns.

You'll make sure we put the spotlight on the things that will make people feel proud to be part of Tarmac. You will take the role of planning news stories for The Circle, scheduling the stories, loading them into the easy-to-use platform, and publishing them. You’ll also be the one sending out announcements that you or the team have written. You’ll take the editor role for our quarterly employee magazine, including managing an external agency.

You will have the freedom to make improvements to channels based on recent colleague feedback, including exploring how we can better use digital technology to engage our people.

You’ll also have the opportunity to take a lead on internal communication campaigns/projects and support our IC business partners in delivering their priorities.

At your heart you will be a creative communicator and a strong administrator, super-organised to manage our schedules, with excellent written English and attention to detail. You’ll share our passion for making sure the right information reaches the right people in the right way for them.

Role Responsibility

In summary you will:

  • Manage an effective suite of internal communication channels.
  • Participate in the delivery of a two-way internal communication strategy that supports Tarmac’s strategic objectives - with a particular focus on the engagement of frontline operatives.
  • Write and edit engaging copy for all internal communication channels.
  • Continuously review effectiveness and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Work with a network of contacts across Tarmac to ensure content represents all parts of the business.
     

Additionally, your key internal relationships will be with

  • Head of Communications and Corporate Affairs and C&CA team
  • Functions including HR and IT
  • BU MDs and management teams
  • Operational site managers.

and external relationships will be with  Agency partners (eg magazine, intranet, printers)
 

Your main responsibilities will be:
Channel management and delivery:

  • Lead the production of online, face to face and print channels (currently intranet, emails, employee magazine) which inform, inspire and involve all employee audiences across the UK.
  • Manage our intranet, scheduling news stories in the editorial calendar, copy-writing articles, and uploading content onto our content management system for publication. Create and own pages to support campaigns and key topics. Work with page owners around Tarmac to provide training and expert guidance on page content, layout etc.
  • Create and maintain an editorial calendar to ensure all messages are integrated and aligned to Tarmac’s organisational priorities.
  • Seek out news and stories which will engage colleagues, celebrate their successes, and support our key messages.
  • Monitor the internal comms inbox, dealing with queries or passing them on to the relevant contact within the IC team or across Tarmac.
  • Act as editor of our employee magazine, managing its schedule and content and overseeing the relationship with an external agency.
  • Advisor to managers across Tarmac on effective employee communications and engagement methods to meet their objectives.
  • Drive measurement and continuous improvement in the team.
     

Channel evaluation and development

  •  Produce monthly channel evaluation report.
  • Use evidence and insight to identify improvements to our internal communication channels.
     

Strategic Communications

  • Build strong and positive working relationships with teams across Tarmac and provide them with internal communications advice and support in order to increase the effectiveness of internal communications for the whole organisation.
  • Create engaging copy, slides and other materials for internal channels.
  • Ensure internal communications are clear, well timed, engaging, of a high quality and consistent with Tarmac tone and style.
  • Assist with providing internal communications consultancy advice and take on projects as required.
  • Opportunity to lead on bespoke communications projects as identified by the Head of Internal Communications and our Internal Communications Business Partners.

Knowledge required:

  • Excellent written English and attention to detail
  • Technical knowledge: good working knowledge of Microsoft Office; experience of intranet content management systems.
  • Experience of HTML, photo editing and video editing would be beneficial but not essential as we’ll train you on the software in use.
  • Understanding of how to write for a variety of audiences
  • Interest in employee engagement and or internal communications.

     

Other knowledge and experience

  • On and offline communication channel management e.g. e - newsletters, magazines
  • Experience in writing for on- and offline channels and managing electronic communications
  • Excellent working knowledge of editorial processes
  • Experience of content management systems
  • Experience of working within a busy communications or marketing function
  • Experience of working with a wide range of stakeholder audiences to build relationships
  • Beneficial: experience of using social media to increase employee engagement
  • Education to `A’ level standard or above.
