We are currently looking for a Lead Rail Operations Manager to join our friendly team based in the Midlands area, we can advise this is a national role, so we are approachable for candidates to apply from other regions. This role is commutable from Loughborough, Leicester, Melton Mowbray, Grantham, Coventry, Birmingham, Derby, Nottingham, Tamworth, Lichfield, Crewe, Stoke-on-Trent, Telford, Buxton, Worcester, Milton Keynes, Northampton, Sheffield, Manchester, Leeds, Chesterfield and the surrounding areas.

Role Responsibility
The Lead Rail Operations Manager will manage the planning and delivery of Tarmacs Rail Operations with the Freight Operating Companies (FOCs) and Wagon leasing companies against agreed KPIs in order to deliver maximum value from Tarmac’s relationship with these key suppliers.
You will lead, manage and support to help deliver the development of new opportunities (eg new terminals or flows) being implemented into the business. In addition; you will manage and design the detailed rail plan, ensuring that the full business needs are met, working closely with Regional and Area teams across the business to ensure material demand is understood and delivered through the supply chain.
You as the Lead Rail Operations Manager will lead, coach and mentor colleagues ensuring that the department exceeds expected levels of performance and excellent levels of support for the operational teams.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Manage, lead and ensure the most efficient delivery of the weekly train plan by the Freight Operating Companies and Wagon leasing companies within each rail package and for each Area
- Track and control monthly freight providers KPI suite, attending monthly meetings with provider and our key internal customers
- Financial responsibility for rail operations within area
- Lead Management - maintenance of management systems (including document control) and of Health and Safety issues directly relating to rail
- Assist the depots to manage the Sidings and Track maintenance agreements and ensure that all accidents and incidents are investigated
- To act as ‘Rail Expert’ as a point of contact for the business to help develop and offer advice on new rail opportunities and developments nationwide
- Manage the rail planning process in conjunction with the Rail Operations Managers to the freight providers and long-term plan in line with the Business forecast
- Work with the Area teams to ensure that the business is aligned in a way to maximise the rail plan
- Have a proven track record of successful people management, management of rail operations and managing budgets
- Lead in resolving complex issues or failures as they arise whether directly or by operational teams
- Continuous review of plant availability, and department performance, Identifying gaps, root causes and subsequent improvement activity
- Manage and develop third party relationships, ensuring effective service contracts are in place and demonstrate best value

The Ideal Candidate
The successful applicant in the role of Lead Rail Operations Manager will be instrumental in the future development and support of Tarmac Rail culture to achieve the benefits available through continuous improvement strategy. You will have experience as a Senior Rail Manager within a similar heavy manufacturing industry and line management - experience of both will be highly desirable.
Lead Rail Operations Manager - Qualifications/Requirements/Capabilities:
- ESSENTIAL – Rail management systems knowledge
- ADVANTAGEOUS – Professional Recognised Qualification in a role related discipline would prove highly beneficial
- Challenge people, hold them accountable for job completion and quality of completion
- Computer literate - familiarity with computer software (word, excel, etc)
- Good communication skills, with a positive, proactive can - do attitude to your team and others
- Continuous Improvement techniques, Lean methodology, Six Sigma and FMEA
- Project Management experience
