Operations Director - South West England

We are currently recruiting for an Operations Director to join our business, whilst our Head Office is located in Abergavenny; you can be located across the South West region. In this role you will Contribute to the creation; and be responsible for the safe, efficient and profitable delivery of all projects within the operational business unit. The Operations Director will have full operational responsibility for the performance of the region including SHEQ, P&L, the development of people, the satisfaction of Griffiths clients, modelling our values and upholding our responsibilities to the environment and communities in which we operate.

Due to the nature of the role, we are open to applications from candidates who live in; or can commute from some of the following areas: Abergavenny, Cardiff, Swansea, Bristol, Cheltenham, Gloucester, Birmingham, Worcester, Swindon, Bath, Reading, Coventry, Oxford, London, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham and across the UK.

Role Responsibility

Reporting directly to the Infrastructure Director, the Operations Director is accountable for, but not limited to, the following within each project(s): Provide leadership, guidance and direction to direct reports and teams within the unit. Clearly communicate and cascade relevant information. Ensure the delivery of an environmentally compliant and quality product.

You will ensure full compliance with safety, environmental, quality and business policies and procedures, ensuring that financial return is maximized on all projects. Ensure applicable allocation of resource and drive best practice and continuous improvement across the business unit.

On a day-to-day basis, the responsibilities of the Operations Director will include (not exhaustive)

  • Ensure health, safety and environmental policies and procedures are complied with and clearly communicated and cascaded within the business unit
  • Drive performance improvement in relation towards an accident and incident free work space, instilling a culture of health and safety best practice by setting a personal example of visible leadership
  • Drive business strategy and performance, ensuring operational activities and quality comply with business policies and procedures
  • Deliver EBITDA targets in line with business plan objectives for the business unit
  • Drive the effective management of any exposure to both financial and contractual risks, maximising financial return on all contracts
  • Support pre-construction on tender submissions and financial reviews
  • Maintain and develop key customer, client and industry relationships
  • Identify opportunities for future growth and assist in securing work
  • Drive performance improvements and share best practice within the business
  • Effective management, coaching and development of all direct reports and drive full employee engagement

The Ideal Candidate

You as our ideal candidate will be a highly experienced Operations Director who is in receipt of the following:

  • Extensive experience working in construction, this will be at a senior level having previously held the positions of: Operations Director, Contracts Director, Commercial Director, Senior Operations Manager, Senior Contracts Manager, Senior Commercial Manager or equivalent – we will not proceed with candidates who do not meet this criteria
  • Experience in a senior civil engineering role can be in a contractor, client or service discipline
  • Demonstratable experience of successfully delivering and securing complex largescale civil engineering or construction projects, with combined budgets more than £20M
  • Proven track record of managing multiple projects simultaneously
  • Experience dealing with multiple client and contracts; whilst managing and leading a team to achieve multiple objectives
  • Experience of strategic planning, development, and implementation
  • Knowledge of Causeway and COINS systems would prove highly beneficial
  • Experience of leading prequals, bids or tenders and building a pipeline of work either within existing or new sectors
  • Leadership - Creating a positive team culture and demonstrate visible leadership and influence within and beyond your own team
  • Strong Customer Focus - Build partnerships and use deep understanding of customer needs to implement ideas that deliver value
  • Continuous Improvement - Identify and create new and innovative ways of doing business and drive improvements
  • Confidence - Demonstrate confidence with a wide range of colleagues & stakeholders; maintain confidence & calm during difficult situations; make decisions that will be unpopular whilst explaining the rationale for these
  • Thinking Skills - Step back from complex situation to gain a better understanding; understand impact of problems/solutions on yourself and others; anticipate obstacles by solving problem and implementing solution

  • IOSH Safety for Executives and Directors
  • CITB Site Managers Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS)
  • Professionally Qualified/Academically Qualified CSCS Card
  • Temporary Works Coordinator (TWC)
  • Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS)
