Role Responsibility

The Norfolk Highways Maintenance contract provides us with the opportunity to offer 4 multi-skilled General Operative Apprenticeships to work in a busy environment delivering highway maintenance works to Norfolk County Council. Your role will be to ensure that works are delivered within programme, in a safe manner and commercial targets are met. Your fundamental duties will cover a wide range of highway maintenance skills including such works as groundworks, drainage, kerbing, concreting and asphalting. You will report directly to a works supervisor and will be working alongside a works gang. These experienced gang members will be assigned to coach and mentor you to ensure you fulfil the job role daily and receive the required level of support as part of the apprentice programme.

The apprenticeship will be backed up with formal block release training at a Tarmac approved college. In addition to this, we will also provide industry recognised Plant and Health and Safety training.

The Ideal Candidate

• A flexible approach to the working day is required as weekend work and night work is possible and should be expected.
• It would be ideal if you can drive but, if not, then it is essential that you have passed your driving test by the end of the programme as the work is mobile and you will need to travel across the Norfolk area
• You are expected to achieve or hold a minimum of five GCSE passes at Grade 4 or above, including Maths and English.
• There will be a need to keep a portfolio of the work skills you experience so you should have basic IT skills alongside the ability to communicate clearly. 
• Previous experience in highway maintenance is preferable but not essential if you can demonstrate the desire and willingness to learn new skills and apply these in the workplace.
