Technical & Quality Manager

We are currently looking for a Technical & Quality Manager to join our friendly team based at our Head Office in Solihull. Here at Tarmac, we are working hard to create a dynamic and inclusive environment and it’s important that our people come from a variety of different backgrounds. 

Role Responsibility

As the successful candidate, you will be responsible for the supply of all Readymix on Section C2/C3 & N1/N2 of HS2 and management of the day to day operation of the quality assurance function across the project.
You will oversee all aspects of product quality and plan resource efficiency. You will represent the Company to customers on technical and quality issues and actively promote Quality Management to ensure that all products meet the required standards. You will also provide a comprehensive and proactive technical support to management and customers across the project.

Key tasks and responsibilities

  • Ensure a zero harm culture within the  technical department.​

  • Support General Manager in delivering and developing Technical and Quality excellence across the project.

  • Work with Production teams to deliver Technical and Quality Excellence across the project.

  • Manage raw material suppliers effectively, ensuring material quality is consistent and meets the high level of compliance expected with all Quality Assurance requirements. 

  • Design, plan, organise and oversee all materials testing across the project to appropriate standards.

  • Management and directing of technical teams across the project including the supervision, coaching, development and succession planning of employees.

  • Provide a full and comprehensive support service proactively to the operations, distribution and commercial departments, championing Quality Management.

  • Establish and maintain the most efficient designs for all finished products with consideration of quality, production and economic factors. 

  • Use of statistical tools to identify trends in raw materials or finished products including factory production control and CUSUM.

  • Leading the development and design of specification compliant concrete mixes in collaboration with the customer through laboratory and plant trials.

  • Manage the HS2 concrete mix design approval process for all concrete mixes.

  • Maintenance of SAP material and technical systems files.

  • Effective handling of customer complaints through investigation of cause and appropriate reporting.

  • Responding to general customer and engineer queries by providing timely advice and responses as and when required.

  • Provision of full and effective testing processes in accordance with appropriate standards and accreditation.

  • Ensure all testing is accurate and records are securely stored. ​

  • Management of raw material properties and ongoing selection of most suitable based on consideration of quality and economic factors.​

  • Ensure all relevant BSi and UKAS requirements are met.​

  • Manage the department to budget targets.​

  • Assist with development of new and innovative products including alternative low carbon cementitious materials.​

  • Monitor and meet minimum compliance test rates and helping retain product conformity certification.​

  • Effective monitoring of non conformances and timely close out​

  • Share best practices.​

  • Manage, monitor and report on Verifi 

.

The Ideal Candidate

As the successful candidate, you will have previous management experience and demonstrable knowledge of quarrying, cement and concrete industry. As well as proven leadership and people management skills.

You will be able to demonstrate experience in leading and improving project delivery operations. 

The ideal candidate will possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be capable to hold senior-level discussions with internal and external bodies.

Other requirements will include;

  • Good understanding of Company SHE requirements relating to the role including reporting requirements.
  • Knowledge of technical operations for aggregates, cement and concrete industries.
  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques used ie CUSUM
  • Excellent understanding of quality assurance systems and procedures.
  • Good understanding of production methods used and awareness of Company product range.
  • Extensive knowledge of Standards, Specifications, Digests etc relating to products and testing.
  • Specialist knowledge of aggregates, cement and concrete products and their applications.
