Transport Manager

We are currently seeking a Transport Account Manager to be accountable for transport operations across a designated area of the Tarmac business. This will include management of own company fleet (up to 30), Core Contract Haulier Fleet (up to 150) and management of third party external fleet.
The role will offer you the opportunity to provide a cost effective, safe and customer focused transport operation for the Asphalt, Aggregates and Concrete business, in line with the Area, Regional and National strategy.
Role Responsibility
- Ensure that all own fleet drivers and hauliers (contract or hired) are inducted in Tarmac SHE policies and local procedures.
- Carry out regular vehicle safety audits to include roadworthiness and compliance with Tarmac vehicle standards.
- Ensure all records of inductions and audits are kept up to date.
- Communicate any new or changed policies to own fleet, contract and hired fleet.
- Act as interface and investigate any incidents/complaints/issues relating to our own fleet drivers, contract hauliers or hire hauliers working for Tarmac.
- Build and maintain relationships with third party haulage suppliers.
- Act as transport capacity input to S&OP process.
- Manage fleet size to best satisfy demand, in the short to medium term.
- Ensure adherence to transport policies and processes.
- Support fleet profile development to ensure overall benefit to Tarmac, sharing best practice where appropriate.
- Manage the standards of own fleet and all haulier availability and takes ownership of performance management throughout the area.
- Act as key input into improving engagement with contract hauliers in regards health, safety and customer service
- Build and maintain relationships with vehicle and body manufacturers and maintainers.
- Liaises with operational site management to ensure haulier champions and representatives are in place and working to profiles of the role.
- Supports requirements of adhering to Area standards
- Carries out Tarmac/FORS auditing on Contract Fleet.
- Regularly attends and inputs to site SHE meetings
- Ensures haulier files are up to date through regular auditing
- Manages Tarmac’s cash by ensuring haulier reserves are kept positive at all times
- Manages suspense account to ensure Tarmac resources are not tied up in vehicles for longer than necessary
- Promote contract haulier scheme internally and externally of Tarmac
- Manage age profile of contracted fleet against business unit target levels
- Perform customer site inductions and audits, when required.
- Monitor performance of fleet safety performance in high risk operating areas such as out of hours work and high speed network operations.
The Ideal Candidate
- A strong understanding of transport regulations regarding ‘O’ Licence, Driver Hours, Construction and Use Regulations
- Proven experience of managing road health and safety
- Ability to manager contracts and contractors
- Have track record of contract negotiations.
- Financial awareness of processes and reporting
- Strong, proven people management and coaching skills
- Has the ability to communicate with a range of stakeholders at varying levels of seniority.
- Able challenge on a process and behavioural basis, both for direct employees and contractors.
