Works Supervisor - Highways

Tarmac is recruiting for an experienced Works Supervisor - Highways to join our fantastic team working on the North Midlands / Midlands project of works.  The role is based from our Tarmac Boroughbridge Depot, and you will be required to travel across the assigned region dependant of current works requirements. The role is easily commutable from Harrogate, York, Leeds, Ripon, North Allerton, Thirsk, Shipley, Sowerby, Knaresborough, Wetherby, Catterick and surrounding areas.

Role Responsibility

As the Works Supervisor - Highways you will be responsible for the successful delivery of both routine works and scheme works on behalf of Tarmac to our clients on whose contract/contracts which we are operating, ensuring their objectives and targets are achieved leading to the successful overall delivery of the projects.

You as the Works Supervisor - Highways will also manage the teams on site (either internal or external providers) to obtain the best possible commercial result for the projects and successfully manage any challenge process/processes which Tarmac’s clients may possess and must be able to travel across the region of work.

Other responsibilities for this role will include (not exhaustive):

  • Effective planning, programming and delivery of programme of works
  • Achievement of Company and Contractual KPI’s and year-on-year improvement of Contract/Scheme KPI’s
  • Ensuring change controls are diligently managed on contracts and site
  • Effectively manage site teams to ensure career progression and competency is achieved
  • Working collaboratively with Tarmac Health, Safety & Wellbeing advisor to promote best practice across all works
  • Ensuring Health and Safety standards are being adhered too across all works alongside collaborating, promoting and developing Health, Safety and wellbeing innovations with Zero accidents and environmental incidents
  • Ensuring training qualifications and competence requirements are in place and monitored for all employees within their team
  • Ensuring CDM regulations (principle contractor responsibilities) are being adhered too across all works
  • Ensuring environmental processes and best practice across the contract and play your part in the reduction of carbon emissions through the works.
  • Ensuring Health & Safety briefings are delivered 
  • Assisting in the management of the fleet, ensuring VOSA compliance

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal Works Supervisor - Highways will have will have worked within a similar role within the Highways industry and have knowledge of on-site Health and Safety policies and procedures associated with the role. 

The successful Works Supervisor – Highways will also have the following essential skills and experience:

  • The ability to work independently and as part of a team and provide leadership and guidance in the role
  • Possess good communications skills and will be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels
  • Computer proficiency, including Excel and Word
  • Certification in Site Safety Management (or willingness to undertake)
  • Experience in Highways Maintenance at a supervisory level, this will be in routine maintenance works and construction
  • CSCS card and SMSTS certificate
  • Flexibility in approach to location and working patterns in accordance with needs of the business

The following are desirable and would support your application:

  • First Aid training & Mental Health First Aid Training
  • IOSH training
  • HGV Class 2 Licence
