Strategy Manager

We are currently looking for an M&A Strategy Manager, to join our friendly Strategy & Development team based in Birmingham. This exciting and challenging role is a key member of the team and will help in maximising the value generated from Tarmac’s investment and growth activities including Mergers & Acquisitions cross all of Tarmac Group in the UK.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the Strategy Director UK & Ireland the Strategy Manager will be responsible for supporting the senior strategy managers and  business leaders to develop medium and long-term strategic plans. 

•Market Analysis: Support the strategy team to conduct comprehensive market research, generating insights and recommendations for strategic decision making and preparing reports and presentations to communicate findings

•Strategy Delivery: Support the Strategy team to establish a view on Tarmac’s overall strategy delivery and progress. Assisting in the development and maintenance of business playbooks, collaborating with cross-functional teams to ensure playbooks are actionable and monitoring their implementation. Supporting the broader business strategy review processes.

•Project Management: Driving and supporting discrete projects ranging from a few weeks to several months or more, to help Tarmac deliver on its strategy. These may include helping clarify or revisit elements of Tarmac’s strategy, providing internal consulting support to teams on key strategic questions, helping define the path to our mission goals, identifying and delivering improvements, as well as potential external-facing engagements to help Tarmac respond to an ever-evolving external landscape. This involves scoping work, qualitative and quantitative analysis, presenting options and recommendations and creating delivery plans, tracking progress, risk mitigation, status reports and handover materials.

•Stakeholder Communication: Building strong relationships around the organisation and helping different teams identify and articulate their contributions to Tarmac’s overall strategy. This will include both formally and informally engaging in strategic discussion with colleagues, providing support and advice and identifying future strategic projects.

•M&A/ Divestment Activity: Support the Strategy Development Manager as required on due diligence, financial modelling, coordination with cross-functional teams, planning and execution activity across all M&A and Divestment activity

•Team Support: Support the wider strategy team to prioritise effectively, build strong relationships, deliver high quality work, refine its way of working and continuously improve. Work flexibly with the team, prioritising deliverables as they are required by the Strategy Director. The team is primarily internal-facing and is high-profile within Tarmac. Team members have a lot of access to information and senior leadership, and are expected to regularly work with, present to and gain the trust of these audiences.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have strong technical financial knowledge and must have a relevant accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CIMA and/or MBA, with the ability to apply their specialist skill set to achieve desired outcomes. You must be in possession of proven experience in dealing with large development investments and/or M&A transactions, combined with a background in industry or corporate finance. It is essential that you have a proven track record of financial modelling and business planning.  You will also be inquisitive and highly analytical by nature, with demonstrable experience of using insightful analysis and review to track and challenge performance.

•Degree in finance/business or related subject (or equivalent)

•Solid experience in a business related role. Experience of the construction sector desirable but not necessary

•Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, proven experience working on complex, multifaceted problems with multiple senior stakeholders and no obvious answer – comfortable with ambiguity.

•Proficient deriving insights from quantitative and qualitative information, including competence with spreadsheets

•Default to taking ownership and proactive in reaching answers. A demonstrated ability to effectively balance this with bringing others along and seeking input and guidance required to reach a quality conclusion.

•Builds relationships and engages a variety of stakeholders, anticipating their needs and concerns, facilitating efficient and value-adding inputs

•Able to manage ‘scope’, juggle competing priorities and ‘manage up’ effectively 

•Communication skills - Experience delivering high quality written and verbal outputs and a demonstrated ability to articulate complex issues into clear and concise messages for a senior audience.

•Creativity - You are open to new ways of working and thinking and bring an open-mindedness and intellectual curiosity to your work and the team. You are comfortable constructively disagreeing with others, and know when to switch modes effectively and sensitively - knowing when to open up a conversation with bold and unusual ideas and when to narrow it down to generate focus and momentum.
