Technician (Quarry and Asphalt)

We are currently looking for a Technician (Quarry and Asphalt) to join our friendly team based at Tarmac Cornelly Quarry in Porthcawl, Bridgend, South Wales. This role is easily accessible from Bridgend, Porthcawl, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Maesteg, Swansea, Barry, Llantwit Major, Newport, Merthyr Tydfil and the surrounding areas.

Role Responsibility
Reporting directly to the Senior Technician, the role of Technician (Quarry and Asphalt) will be responsible for sampling and testing of various construction materials (aggregates and asphalt) on a daily basis where accuracy will be paramount. The role of Technician (Quarry and Asphalt) will also:
- Carry out product sampling and testing and equipment calibration in line with procedures and British Standards
- Undertake routine aggregate and asphalt testing in line with procedures and British standards as well as binder recovery of recycled asphalt
- Carry out accurate tests in a timely manner, meeting test frequency rates and adhering to the relevant standard, reporting the results and Quality KPIs
- Complete and file testing documentation correctly, and input test results into the appropriate system
- Advise management/supervisor or production teams when quality standards are being compromised and instigate action to rectify or prevent non-compliance
- Correctly identify any quality issues and take effective corrective action when required
- Comply with standards and QA procedures – measured in company internal and external audits
- Assist Senior Technician with complaint investigations and support with plant recipe control
- Comply with Company safety policies and promote a high standard of safety awareness
- Positively promote the company brand and act as an ambassador when customer-facing
The Ideal Candidate
To be successful in the role of Technician (Quarry and Asphalt) we are ideally looking for a candidate with laboratory experience gained within the construction sector, who possesses knowledge of aggregate and asphalt testing and production, however we welcome applications from candidates without experience as full training will be provided.
The role of Technician (Quarry and Asphalt) is not a “clinical laboratory” type of role – it is a vital hands-on site-based role, working in a small team closely supporting our quarries and other operational sites.
Suitable candidates for this role will:
- Be hard-working and self-motivated
- Have excellent communication skills and be able to liaise with stakeholders of varying seniority levels
- Be accurate in their work with strong attention to detail/able to identify potential risks/issues (training will be provided)
- Be able to work independently and to collaborate as part of a wider team
- Be IT literate
- Possess a good numerical aptitude (handling calculations/interpreting results)
- Be flexible in their working approach (some sites are 24/7 operations so there will be paid overtime - weekend working and occasional night shifts)
- Be Health and Safety conscious
- Hold a full UK driving licence (use of company vehicle)
